Friends on Friday-Ash

So, time has suddenly gotten away from me and here it is May and I haven't blogged in quite a bit.  In my defense, things have been crazy busy.  I have been rocking the grades so far. My hubby has started his preceptor-ship at the hospital.  The kids are in swimming and baseball.  Fun. Crazy. Good.  Our 12th anniversary is tomorrow and we are celebrating with a mini-weekend getaway! But, on to the interview.

I did this interview way back in February!  I am so bad.  I am, however, super blessed to have Ash in my life.  She is a source of pure joy and badassery.  Our four year old daughters were born on the exact same day and we have known each other since before they were born. All the pictures in this blog are courtesy of Ashlynn imagery, Ash's photography business. Check out her blog: http://www.ashlynnimagery.com/

The girl

N:Could you tell me a bit about yourself?

A:I am just a girl. A girl with a not so secret obsession with chocolate. A girl who has seen and experienced what life can throw at you. A girl who has two little girls who shine the light into every crevice of my heart and being. I'm a just girl who is in love with a boy. My little girls are quite fond of this boy too he is quite an awesome daddy! I am also a proud daddy's girl. If it wasn't for my daddy I would not be where I am today in any way shape or form! There is a lot that can be said of this girl but the qualities I hold dear of myself are my humor... life is entirely way too short to live in anger, I love to laugh. Love, there is no life without love. Honesty, this is what you can be sure to always get from me whether you are my friend or I just met you. I'm also exceedingly loyal and faithful to the end. I'm just an all around your next door neighbor Canadian girl... I love bacon, chocolate and really loud music to dance too!

The boy

N:What are you passionate about?

A: I am most definitely passionate about family. Family is the number one most important element in my life. Family isn't just blood to me it's about choosing to be there no matter what thick or thin. My family are the ones I put my most effort and love into. I am also a photographer, I have been creative my whole life, drawing, painting, sculpting and now I have my camera as my medium and I am in love! Nothing gives me greater pleasure than catching a moment and making it a piece of art for all to admire and be invited into share the moment of the subject. I'm also an avid reader, I love books and having images painted in my head playing out some twisted plot!

Rylie

N:What was a defining moment in your life?

A: I have quite a few of these so it's hard to just pick one. A defining moment when I was a teenager was when my father showed me the adoption papers. Nothing sweeter than knowing he chose to be my dad (love you dad! ). A defining moment in my early 20s is when I first became pregnant it challenged everything about myself and my fears. Being a mom is the single most greatest accomplishment I will have in my life. My most recent moment is stumbling into photography. It makes me feel whole and constantly challenges myself. My moments have led me here it was definitely quite the journey, but I am happy with the direction I'm
headed.

Danielle

N:You are just so amazingly comfortable in your own skin and I admire that about you. You seem happy, pretty much all the time. Is there anything that pisses you off?

A: LOL @ happy all the time. I wish I was happy all the time. Nope, things can greatly annoy me. I have short patience for the obviously stupid things people (including myself ) can do that could have been solved with some thinking... or if life just throws me another twist out of no where. My kids now say "really" because of me. Every time someone or something happens that just irks me I go " Really!??! Seriously ? " haha.

N: Why did you decide to get tattoos and what/where are they?

A: I got tattoos for a few reasons. One, I really love art and I like having what I love on my body forever it's just for me and it's only mine. I also like being constantly reminded it's not fair to judge a book by it's cover that a lot of things really are just skin deep there's so much more beyond. I have a full sleeve tattoo on my left arm. It is a whole piece with a tree, orchids, coy fish, water and I have a crying geisha on the inside of my arm. To me it represents my life, the fish/flowers are times in my life the water is time constantly flowing through. The crying geisha represents emotions that have come with my life and the tree/orchids represent my father ( the tree ) and my sisters the orchids my family. I also have a tribal tattoo on my lower back with my birth month jewel in the center and Rylie's name on the back of my neck. I will be getting Danielle's name tattooed on me as well. And one for my grandmother.

N: What is your favorite joke or the funniest thing to ever happen to you?

A: Being born. LOL! I could not pin point just one thing, I have a tendency of finding most things greatly amusing.

N: What is your favorite kind of chocolate?

A: hmm right now I'm loving the Cadbury mini eggs.. it's like crack to me haha.

N: Thank you so much for being patient with me.  Thank you for giving me the courage to just be myself and enjoy everyday. I am so glad we are friends.  You remind me that everyday can be fun and new adventures are just waiting to happen, we just have to give them a little nudge once in a while and bloom where we are planted.

Friends on Friday- The Hunn

I met The Hunn at church.  She had flaming red hair and a wardrobe that proved she had personality to boot.
The Hunn
We really got to know each other well when I was the chorister for the children in our ward and she was our pianist. We would chat behind the piano while the lesson was being taught before or after singing time.  She is a kindred spirit and one of my all time best friends. She is wicked smart and always made me smile even when I didn't want to smile.  She did make me cry once, but that was because she surprised me by giving me free tickets to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a free overnight stay at a hotel.  It was because of her that I was able to go to OSF for the first time.  She also encouraged me in pursuing my degree and I will always be grateful that she helped give me the courage to try. So, here we go!

N: Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

H: Sure! Well, I grew up in the Air Force and so I moved around a lot. I think that's why I still really love exploring things, geography, and maps. I'm also always very concerned about figuring out exactly where I am and where I'm going (literally and metaphorically) because of my transient childhood. I get really frustrated if I feel lost in a city, but also if I feel like I'm not working towards a big goal. Always wanting to keep moving--that's me. (Unless it's jogging. I hate jogging...)

I met my husband, Paul, when we were both working at the library in college. We worked together for three years and didn't go on our first date till two months before graduation. We both had been accepted into PhD programs on opposite sides of the country, though, so we we broke up after a month of dating thinking that things just wouldn't work out.

Aaaaaaaand, we got married two and a half years after that. Turns out that we just never could forget about each other.
Aren't they adorable!
We lived in Oregon for three years after I moved away from Boston and now we're living in Germany! We moved here for Paul's post-doc in biology and I'm teaching English at the local university here while I'm finishing a master's degree in GIS (computer-based cartography...think a fancy version of Google Earth). See? I love maps!

We've really been taking advantage of how inexpensive it is to fly places within Europe (15 dollars for a flight to Rome!) and in the four months we've been here, we've spent weekends in Istanbul, Prague, and London. I'm trying to learn German, but it's incredibly hard! I hope I can at least understand what the cashiers are saying to me at the grocery store by the end of two years.

N: What are you passionate about?

H: I'm really passionate about women's rights and feminist theology, actually. It was the main focus of my PhD dissertation prospectus--I wanted to examine the ways Mormonism (the faith I grew up in) and feminism complemented and contradicted each other.

After two years of coursework, I realized that studying that topic was getting too emotionally difficult for me to handle. At school I felt like I was being too critical of the culture I grew up in. But, at church, I felt like greater truths and rights I felt very strongly about were belittled or actively silenced. Living split all the time really took its toll on me professionally and personally. So, I officially withdrew from my program's emphasis so that I could be more free to express my true feelings in both my publications and my work within the historical department of the LDS church (not to mention just my daily interactions with friends and family!).

So, blah blah, I feel like I'm blabbering. I'm sorry!

I'm very passionate about making sure all women feel that there is a powerful female deity with authority in the universe. I feel that women should be truly respected as whole and complex human beings in their personal, professional, and spiritual lives--never made to feel "under" or "less than" any other person simply because of their sex. I feel that women should be represented more in scripture and over and behind the pulpit. Only then will both men and women really be able to work together and serve together in a religious community with the greatest strength.

This is a strong and amazing woman
and her triumphal return to London

I believe that women should be given the power, self-assurance, and individuality in their spiritual communities that we all already know they have inherently! And this should be available in every aspect in their lives, not just at church. Though, in my particular studies and writing, I've just focused on theology because I saw how integrated gender roles and doctrine were in my childhood religion and how religious gender theology has shaped subtle and not-so-subtle hierarchies between gender for millenia.

N: I am not surprised that you were able to help give me self-assurance, now that I know all that! One of the many reasons I so value your friendship is because you have made me feel valued as a woman and that it is okay for me to want to be considered an equal among men. You made me realize that it was not only okay to be intelligent but necessary.

What was a defining moment in your life?

H: Wow! Let me think about this. This is a good question!

I think I'd have to say that it was the day I realized that I loved Paul. We had been just writing letters to each other for about six months while we were in grad school--nothing romantic, just asking each other how things were going.

One early morning (March 5th, 2007--I even remember) I woke up, sat straight up in bed (which is weird for me, I'm really bad at waking up), and said, out loud, alone in my room,

"I love Paul and I am going to marry him."

And I was so surprised! I had no idea where that came from! It was like it wasn't even me talking, but someone else talking through me.

Right after I said it I just felt so relaxed and peaceful and happy. I jumped out of bed and did a little jig on the floor and thought, "That's totally the right thing to do. That is what is going to happen. We could get married tomorrow and I wouldn't be scared or worried at all."

And a year and a half later, we got married.

I've never had anything like that happen to me before or since.

Yay, marriage!

N: That is an amazing story of you two. There is nothing like knowing you are with the person that you are meant to be with. Now on to some fun stuff.

You have been doing lots of traveling since you have moved to Germany.

What is the funnest experience you have had so far and what is the most amazing thing you have eaten?

H: Oh man! We've seen and done so many amazing things so far, but for a FUN experience, I'd have to say that taking a Turkish Bath was pretty hilarious and awesome. Had to let go of a lot of inhibitions on that one, since a large part of it was completely undressing and getting a rough scrub-down by an equally nude female attendant. But, it was great because I realized that I shouldn't have to feel embarrassed about my body, you know? And it was actually really fun to just hang out in that steam room and get a bubble bath in a bath house that was built in the 1700s. That was in Istanbul--which just was a really mind-blowing place all together.

Outside the Turkish 'bate'

And for eating, I think the food we ate in Prague was the best so far (and really inexpensive) and I still have dreams about the apple strudel there (yah-ble-ko-vee zah-vin) and some roasted wild boar.

Then, of course, there were the spicy sheep intestine sandwiches in Turkey--not so bad, actually!

Sheep intestines!
N: Surprising about the sheep intestine sandwiches. I loved your blog post about the Turkish bath. Where else are you planning on visiting?

H: Well, we made a list and a really strict monthly budget when we first got here so we've planned out quite a few places already (traveling is the reason we moved here so we're not going to let it pass us by!). Our goal was to try to visit a different country each month (4-5 day trip) and so far we've been pretty good about that.

We aren't going anywhere in February though, because we're taking a double-length trip (10 day) in March to ITALY! WOO! (it was our #2 place we wanted to go). We're also trying to save enough money to take an 8-day trip to Scotland in the Fall or Summer (our #1 place).

Otherwise, we're trying to plan shorter, long-weekend trips (the 4-5 day trips) for the other months of the year to Paris, Spain, Southern France, Denmark, maybe Poland, Vienna, Switzerland, Budapest, the coast of Turkey, and maybe one of the Scandinavian countries. I'd really like to see Finland because I'm working on a project about it at work right now, but it is one of the most expensive countries in Europe so we'll see...

We're getting really good at traveling for 5 days with just one small backpack and really being on-a-shoestring budget travelers so if anyone wants some tips about how to travel in Europe inexpensively, please feel free to ask me any questions!!

N: You are just fabulous. I'm 5th generation Scottish, so Scotland is high up on my list too. My number one is currently London because I want to go to the Globe and see a show there. Of course one of my dreams is to perform there. Thanks for taking a picture of it for me.

Paul at The Globe!
In closing, I was wondering if you would like to share some of your favorite web sites or articles that in your opinion empower women?

H: Oh man! That's hard! It's just hard because I think that since everyone is a totally individual person, each person finds their individual power from a million different places--so it would be hard for me to try and think of one source that would give strength to *all* women in the world...but hm...let me see...

I think that for anyone who is or grew up LDS (Mormon) that the websites feministmormonhousewives.org or the-exponent.com have a really good selection of articles about the experience of the ups and downs of being a woman and a feminist in the church. I have a great deal of respect for most of the authors--many of whom I knew personally in graduate school or met at theology conferences and they are all really generous, kind, passionate people. But I also know that some people could find some articles on these sights a little frightening or vaguely threatening at first, so I guess I'm sorry about that if that might make some uncomfortable--that's not the intention.

I think any website or organization that encourages free agency for everyone--men and women--in their life choices is positive, especially those that help people gain a really well-rounded education about gender, society, and how they interrelate. I have trouble thinking of websites about these things in particular though! I'm sorry! I can think of a few books, however.

For example, there's the recent book "Delusions of Gender" by Dr. Cordelia Fine is really solid and a good intro to the whole issue.

I also thought "Marriage: A History" by Stephanie Coontz was incredibly interesting! Especially showing how the whole "ideal" marriage has changed over the centuries and why--this, of course, is very integral to both the study of femininity and masculinity.

I haven't read this next book, but I think it would be interesting to any readers out there who might be parents of daughters. I've heard a lot of good things about the author too: "Schoolgirls: Young Women, Self-Esteem, and the Confidence Gap" by Peggy Orenstein.

N: Thank you, so much Heidi! Those are all wonderful and you know how I love a good book. Everyone needs a friend like you. I absolutely adore and love you! I miss you so much. Thank you for being a great friend, role model and awesome human being.

One of my favorite pictures, of an amazing couple
made up of two incredible people.

Friends on Friday- Terri

What better way to recharge the blog than with a friend interview. This one has been brewing for a while, thanks for being patient.

Terri is a friend to all that she meets.  She is always smiling and willing to lend an ear.  Her kids are super sweet and have their mother's talent of making you feel special and loved.  We both are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I had the privilege of teaching her kids songs in Primary. Her children would always sing their best and would give me a hug at any opportunity.  She is a good friend so I wanted to know more about her.

N: Could you tell me a bit about yourself?

T: I am a stay at home mom to 3 rambunctious kids ages 4, 6 & 8 and a wife to an amazing rambunctious man. We met while I was living with a friend and her husband. We were married 8 months later. I am a "Coastie Wife". This is what you are called if you are married to someone who is in the Coast Guard. We have been married for 10 years. It's been a great experience meeting new people (although it takes me a while to get to know people because I am not outgoing when it comes to making friends, but I'm getting better with this whole moving every 3-5 years.)

N: What are you passionate about?

T: I am passionate about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I had a wild streak when I moved out of my mom's house that lasted about 3 years. I know personally what it feels like to not have the Holy Ghost with you. Ever since coming back to church, my life has changed tremendously--not only mine, but my husbands as well.

N: What was a defining moment in your life?

T:  My daughter's blessing day. This is the day that changed my life! The opening song in sacrament meeting was "Families Can Be Together Forever". Tears streamed down my face. They continued through her whole blessing. That day I told my husband that I was going to go back to church. I knew it was where I needed to be!

N: What are the best and worst things about being a Coastie wife? What was your favorite place to live?

T: Best: Getting to see new places... even though we met here in Oregon, transferred to Kodiak, Alaska, and then transferred back to here.. so I haven't been to many places! But.. Alaska was amazing! And going to a new ward and making new life long friends.

Worst: Having your husband away from you. In Alaska, he would have to be gone anywhere from 1-3 months at a time out in the Bering Sea on a boat... not being able to talk to him on the phone every day was hard! He could only call while he was in port. But I looked forward to a daily email from him, even if it was just "I'm OK!"

So far, I'd have to say Alaska--like I said... I haven't been to many places yet.. But... Kodiak is BEAUTIFUL! And lots of things to do with little kiddos! It's a great place to raise young kids, and there are so many people who are far away from their families that you just become one big family!

Kodiak, Alaska

N: I know you must have some fun stories about your kids. Could you tell me some of them?

T: M has always been a sweetheart to be around. We lived next door to my grandparents when she was a baby, until she turned one. When we transferred to Kodiak, my grandpa missed her so much, he would look through her pictures every day and they'd always put a smile on his face! We were able to visit one last time before he passed away, and while she was there, you wouldn't even know that he wasn't feeling well!

We are learning a lot of new things about B since he has started school! This year, he's decided that he likes running laps a whole bunch! Since school started on September 6th, with only 4 day school weeks, he has already ran 87 miles!

E is by far our most challenging child so far... But he's a lot of fun too! He's funny... whenever he's looking at something, he shouts out the first thing that comes to mind. We were looking through an oriental trading magazine when he was three... he saw a costume and said "That's what I want to be for Halloween... an Octopus Butt!" First of all... why would anyone want to be an octopus butt for halloween??? Second... it was an alien!

N: They are so fun! What advice would you give other military wives?

T: Try not to get frustrated with your husband's job... because he's probably frustrated with it more than you, and then having you frustrated as well puts more stress on him!!! Make sure he knows you are thankful for him and that you love him!

I think he knows that Terri is thankful for him!

N: What are some of the ways that your life has changed for the better since coming back to church?

T: The most important is having A join the church, and being able to go to the temple to be sealed together forever! I'm healthier... making better choices! Being a good example to my kids!

N: Terri, thank you so much for sharing your life with me. You are not only a good example to your kids but to me and all that you meet.

Friends on Friday- Alicia

Alicia is beautiful on the inside and out, it almost makes you want to hate her. She is actually impossible to hate. She is so sweet, talented, and just an overall good woman. I am honestly jealous of her because she has a BA in Theatre Arts already.  But she is just so darn likable and lovable. She and I are both artists, actresses, wives, and mothers but she has the added bonus of being some other great things that you will find out below. We are determined to meet in Ashland one day, but it hasn't happened yet.  So, for now I will just harass her by interview.
A beautiful woman and a little boy who adores his mama.

N: Could you tell me about yourself?

A: This is always the hardest question for me to answer because there are so many factors that make up who I am. I earned my BA in Theatre Arts from San Jose State University in 1999. Twelve hours after graduating, I hopped on a plan to do ranch work in Colorado for a couple years and then returned to California where I worked as a barn manager and educator for the Humane Society of Silicon Valley before returning to SJSU earn my teaching credential. In 2005, I earned my MA in Education Administration/Supervision from CSU Chico and married B, my soul mate. We have two boys – W (3 ½) and C (1 ½) – and they are my world.
The family

I am an artist, actress, rancher, wife, teacher, and mother. I have a hard time finding time for each part of myself – so for now I am focusing on being the best wife, mother, and teacher possible. As my boys grow up, I would really like to get back into acting and someday start an educational ranch.

N: What are you passionate about?

A: I don’t know if this will make much sense, but I am passionate about the creative process – be it art, poetry, acting, or teaching. I absolutely love to create and explore. I am not good at following paths that have been set for me…I need to create my own. I get a rush out of making new things – websites, lessons, stories, etc.
I had to throw in one silly picture because she jokingly told me not to.
Here she is as Concita in Last Cha Cha for the Bahama Mama

I also love inspiring others to help make a difference in helping Earth. I believe that every little action makes a difference and that everything and everyone is connected. I filmed a documentary in Yosemite National Park in the 90s and hope to someday bring it all together with current footage and interviews.

N: What was a defining moment in your life?

May 30, 1999 – hours after graduating from college, I hopped on a plan to Colorado where I had never been before. Several of my friends were moving to Los Angeles to make it in the movies or they were staying in the San Francisco theatres (I managed a show at the time in SF), but I decided to leave and pursue my passion for horses and ranch work as the Kids’ Wrangler at Elk Mountain Ranch in Buena Vista, Colorado. I cannot fully explain what happened, but I made a decision for the benefit of my future family. I wanted to begin a life that I could share with others. Acting in and managing shows every weekend and doing late night radio work did not lend itself to having a family…so I left that life behind.

The following year, I met Brandon and as life has turned out, I know that it was the best decision I have ever made. Do I ever wonder how things would have turned out had I gone to L.A. or stayed in SF? Absolutely! Do I long for the spotlight…the stage…the rush of acting? Definitely! But looking at my boys and hearing them laugh as they ride our horses reminds my why I hopped on that plane so many years ago. And I know someday I will return to my first love!
Here she is with her soul mate.
(Her bouquet is full of my favorite kind of roses, she has good taste)

N: Wow, you are amazing. Excuse me for being naive but what is an educational ranch?

A: I don't know about amazing, but thank you.

You are not naive - my concept for an educational ranch is not very well known, and I don't know if there is a ranch out there already doing what I hope to someday do. I would like to take the idea of a guest ranch/dude ranch and expand it to include an educational component. Part of the year, it would be open for traditional family vacations and the other part of the year it would be reserved as an outdoor school. Classes could visit for a day up to a week to experience ranch life and all of its connections to science, writing, art, math, history, etc. It would essentially be a hands on educational facility.

N: Would you mind sharing some of your poetry or a short story?

A: Oh, gosh, it is hard for me to open up and share my writing because it is usually so personal...but here goes...

Here is a little poem that I wrote just over two years ago, in memory of a dear friend (and my mentor) who passed away on 11-11-09. It isn't earth shattering, but it was a healing poem for me...words often help me heal:

Some sights cannot fully be captured in a picture…
…the brilliant orange hue of a glowing full moon
…a herd of deer grazing peacefully in a misty meadow
…the calm of a glorious lake after Winter’s first storm

Some emotions cannot fully be captured in words…
…the never ending impact a teacher has on a child
…the pain of watching a friend lose her battle with cancer
…the love one person can feel for another

These moments cannot be captured…
…they must be lived
…they must be honored
…they must be remembered

Through art and writing, Nancy taught me to open my eyes and take in the world for all of its beauty. She taught me to believe - in others and in myself. I am eternally grateful for her presence in my life over the past 20 years. Her memory will be honored and remembered.

And another one that I found - it is actually a song that I wrote for another friend, Tom, who passed away in December of 2005.

Dancing With Angels

Your time came too quickly,
I never even said goodbye;
Not that I would have anyway,
I never believed you would die.

I hope you're dancing with angels,
and they hold you close in their arms;
I hope you're dancing with angels,
and I hope they sing you this song.

About hard times and how you got through them,
About freedom and finding your way;
About always being true to yourself,
No matter what people may say.

I hope you're dancing with angels,
And they hold you close in their arms;
I hope you're dancing with angels,
And I hope they sing you this song.

About good times and laughter and romance,
About friendships that never will fade;
How someday we'll all be together again,
And I'll tell you what I meant to say.

I hope you're dancing with angels,
And they hold you close in their arms;
I hope you're dancing with angels,
And I hope they sing you this song...
...Oh, someday I'll sing you this song.

I really do write about things other than death...but I am an emotional writer and for some reason these were the two that I could easily find/remember quickly. I do have a book of several songs that I have written over the years. Someday I will find the courage to share them with others. I am actually learning to play guitar right now so that I can put music to my lyrics...it will be quite some time though before that happens. I am not a natural. lol.

N: Those were wonderful, thank you for sharing them. I appreciate it. What is your favorite thing about being a mother?

A: Absolutely, positively everything. I never would have expected that having kids would be such a powerful experience, but it is - and I enjoy each moment. I love hearing the laughs and giggles and watching my boys explore and try new things. I love the hugs and the silly stories and the constant questions. I love watching my boys ride their horse and make messes with paints. I just love watching them grow. Life is such a miracle and my crazy, adorable boys are the best.

Alicia with her boys and one of their horses.
In an odd sort of way - I even enjoy the tough moments like sleepless nights. When times are rough, I remind myself that they will only be young once and that the fact that they are alive and breathing in the middle of a long night is a miracle to be thankful for. (W's lungs collapsed at birth so I think I value every breath more than some, and a dear friend's 2 year old just survived cancer/5 months of chemo. I truly value each day with my boys for the gift that it is.) I just love being a mom and knowing that I get to share my life with my husband, watching (and helping) two boys grow up. I like to say that my job in life has become to raise two future Mr. (W)Rights.

Thank you...from the bottom of my heart... for sharing your personal stories through your blog, for interviewing friends, and for inspiring me.
Family is the best.

N:  Alicia, I am honored to be YOUR friend.  Thank you for sharing your poetry. It was beautiful as are you. Thank you for encouraging me to follow my dreams and not making me feel silly for pursuing them.  I am grateful that you are in my life and I look forward to being your friend for the rest of our lives.  I think your idea of an educational ranch is inspiring and I am in awe of your talents as a mother.  I look forward to seeing you succeed in your endeavors. Thank you for reminding me that our choices are what defines us, so we must always choose the good and that choosing our families is always the best choice. What can I say except, I adore you.

Friends on Friday - Nicole

Nicole is a strong woman of faith.  She thinks she is boring but I just think she is fun.  She is devoted to her husband and her children.  She is crafty and just plain cool.  I think that is part of why some of us like to call her Coolio.  Any how, I'm just grateful she is my friend.

So, tell me about yourself:

C:  I'm a stay-at-home mom to two crazy kids, and wife to an amazing husband. Joe and I have been married for 6 years. G is 3 1/2 and is the quintessential princess and girlie-girl. A is 22 months and is all boy. Rough and tumble should be his middle names :)

N: What are you passionate about?

C: My passions include making our home a safe and comforting environment for all who enter, reading, praying, listening to sermons, finding new adventures for our family and baking.

N: What do you like to bake?

C: I love to bake cookies, bread, biscotti, caramel rolls. Anything really :)

N: What is your favorite recipe?

C: Probably my pumpkin bread with chocolate chips.

N: I'll take some of that, please.  Have you ever had any cooking disasters?

C: When I was about 16, my mom and I tried making these decorative Easter eggs by dipping small inflated balloons into melted almond bark. Well, the balloons kept popping and spraying the bark everywhere. We finally gave up, but the entire kitchen, ceiling, counters, as well as the two of us, were covered in splatters of almond bark. We still laugh about it today!

N: I think I've seen something like that on Pinterest. I'll have to stay away from that. It is great that you can laugh about it now.  Family seems to create some of the funnest memories. What is some of your favorite family adventures?

C: We love to play outside in the summer, take walks to the park, have picnics, or just have tickle fights in the living room.

N: I think those are some of the best adventures.  What is one of your favorite memories of your children?

C: One day, I was washing dishes and A fell and bonked his head. G went up to him, gave him a huge hug, kissed his forehead and said, "It's okay, buddy. I'll always take care of you." Melts my heart just thinking about it!

N: That is so sweet. Aww. You mentioned you like reading. What is your favorite book?

C: Honestly, the Bible. I love the relevance it has, even for us today, the promises, comfort and peace it brings.

N: Amen, to that.  I know that you just adore your husband.  What do you think makes him such an amazing husband?

C: He's humble, honest and hard-working. He cares for our family in so many ways, from working his butt off to provide for us financially, to playing with the kids, to making me leave for some time away. He's constantly striving to become a better man, husband and father. He's funny, smart and Godly. He's truly the biggest blessing in my life, and he makes me a better person just for knowing him.

N: Wow, it sounds like he is truly worthy to be your husband. I think it is great that you have each other.  You both are wonderful parents. What do you enjoy most about being a mother?

C: There are so many things that make me smile about our kids, but I can say the thing I enjoy most is the fact that I'm the one at home raising them. I get to see their interactions with each other, see their eyes light up when they learn something new, instill our values and teach them about the Lord. I love that I know them better than anyone. I love that my kids are best friends, and I pray that continues long after they're raising their own families.

N: Thank you so much for letting me interview you. I think you are all the things that a child could wish for in a parent.  You are truly blessed to have such an amazing family and I am blessed to have you as my friend. Thank you for helping me remember that with God all things are possible and what a blessing it is to have mothers in this world.  You are an angel.

Friends on Friday-Alaina

Alaina - Photo by Jessica Frieling

Alaina  is a powerhouse.  She can sing, she can dance, she can act, she is a mother, a hairdresser, a devoted wife, in other words AMAZING.  We met at the Hale Centre Theatre in Arizona where we were the only two girls in the show, Man With the Pointed Toes.  She later took over the role of Florence in that show in later years. We had a blast and did several other shows together including A Christmas Carol and A Curious Savage. She has performed all over the Valley of the Sun in AZ and audiences love her.  I love her too.  I think she is fabulous and I was excited to get to know her better. So on with the interview...

Me and Alaina
The first Charwoman and Laundress at Hale Centre Theatre's A Christmas Carol

N: Tell me about yourself

A: My name is Alaina B. Born in the Bronx, New York.
I was raised in the beautiful Catskill mountains in upstate New York.
I started acting at a very early age and was performing professionally by age 11.
I have been very happily married for 17 years and have 2 beautiful daughters and an amazing husband. all of whom still support my passion for acting.
Alaina's girls and hubby
N: What are you passionate about?

A: I am passionate about family and the arts; mainly singing and acting and musical theatre. I'm also passionate about the history of our great country.

N: What was a defining moment in your life?

A: One defining moment was when I realized that anything is possible if you are true to who you are and your beliefs, and you work hard to achieve goals. and that it's not up to others to make us happy in this life; but up to ourselves and that you must never settle for less that what you believe you are worth.

And I think Noe is fabulous!

N: Aw, thanks.  Alright, here's a couple more questions...

If you could only choose acting or singing what would you choose and why?

A: I cannot choose between acting and singing as they are both one in the same to me.

N: That is why you are so great at both.  What was the most favorite role you have ever played?

A: My favorite role is Christine in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Alaina as Christine
(She won an AriZoni award for this role:
Best Actress in a Major Role-Musical Non-Contracted)

N: What do your girls think of your acting? Do they want to get involved in the arts?

A: My girls are very supportive and proud of what I do. However, they don't seem to have an interest in acting but they do both play Cello and Violin and enjoy performing in their orchestras.

N: I think it is great that your family is supportive. Because you are an actress you get to answer the famous questions from the Actor's Studio:

What is your favorite word?

A: My favorite word is Dream.

N: What is your least favorite word?

A: Work

N: What turns you on?

A: An amazing actor.

N: What turns you off?

A: A terrible actor.

N:  What sound or noise do you love?

A: I love the sound of my daughters playing their instruments.

N: What sound or noise do you hate?

A: I hate the sound of dogs barking!

N: What is your favorite curse word?

A: Shit!

N: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

A:  Undercover cop.

N: What profession would you not want to do?

A: Defense attorney.

N: If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

A: "I made coffee...I hope you brought a bobka" or "woohoo...let the party games begin"

N: Alaina you are too fun.  Thanks for letting me interview you and inspiring me to keep following my dreams.  Bravo for all your hard work both on stage and off.  Thanks for being my friend and interviewee!

Friends on Friday- Cathy

What to say about Cathy?  It is not that I don't have the words, it is just that there are so many words to describe her. She is unique.  She is one of those mothers who somehow manages to work full time but always have time for her daughters and her friends.  She is always planning fun things for them to do.  She has 392 pictures on her phone and not one of them is of her.  She is selfless, compassionate and loving to all whom she calls friend.  She also has been having some debilitating health problems lately but she powers through them everyday with a smile on her face and a joke at the ready for whomever needs her.  I adore Cathy and I am honored to have her as my friend...

One of the only single pictures of Cathy from work.

N: Tell me about yourself.

C: I am a 33 (until Saturday) mother of two. Happily unmarried with two cats and one dog.
Cathy with her two daughters, A1 and A2.

N: What are you most passionate about?

C: My kids and family

N: What was one of the defining moments in your life?

C:  Man, there have been so many. I would say the defining moment was losing my mom at age 17.

N: What is the funnest thing you have done with your kids?

C: We are always doing fun things. While we have done the Disney trip, rock climping, cave exploring and amusement parks, the most fun we have are the unplanned moments.Singing "The Lazy Song" while driving down the road at the top of our lungs with the windows down. Or just hanging out doing competitions on the Wii's Dance Revolution game. Picnics in the back yard, even when it is raining. Staring up at the clouds on a warm summer day. Picking strawberries and turning it into some yummy dessert. I would have to say the funnest thing I have done with my kids, is just being a kid myself.

N: I remember you telling me several kidisms that your youngest daughter has said. What is your favorite kidism that you have heard from her?

C: I have often said I should keep a book. The mind of a 3 year old, so innocent and unknowing yet thoughtful and kind.

The only thing I can think of right now is last night as I was tucking A2 in she told me not to kiss her on the mouth because her nose was running, instead I was to kiss her on her fourth head so I wouldnt get sick. I could not help but laugh.

N: I have heard you are a bit of a prankster, what is your most memorable prank?

C: My most memorable prank was not intended to be a prank. I made black bean brownies and told everyone not to eat to many because they were made with black beans. My SO decided I said that to keep everyone from eating them all and ate the whole pan. By 3 am he was in the fetal position on the bathroom floor. It looked like he was in labor.

N: That's funny. Now for something a bit serious. You don't have to answer if you don't want to. Do you think that losing your mom at an early age helped you become a better mom?

C: It helped and it hurt.

It helped me see time is short and you never know how much time you have left. So I tend to live each day as it could be my last. While I know I was very much loved growing up, I make sure I always tell my kids and loved ones I love them everyday. I make sure to cherish those special moments as you never know when or if they will come again.

But I grew up too fast and became a mom at 17 to my younger brothers. I have never finished college since I dropped out to raise and support them. I never really had a chance to grow up. I sometimes feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders with no one to turn to.  I feel it has made it harder to develop relationships with friends and/or romantic partners as I am always afraid of losing the one I love. It has also made me avoid conflict as the last conversation I had with my mom was an argument. I have never been able to let that go.  Even when that means sacraficing my own wants and needs.

N: I am glad you decided to be my friend.  Like I said before, you are one of the most selfless people I know. I'm curious and nosy, what made you decide to be "Happily unmarried"?

C:  I was married to my oldest daughters dad. The day we got married he turned into Dr Jekyl (or which ever one was the bad one). I do not know why. He was mentally abusive and unfaithful. I sank into a deep depression.

To me, I have made the commitment in my heart to love S. and for now he is fine with that. I am sure one day he will press the issue of getting married, and I will go through with it. But marriage scares me to death. We live together as husband and wife with out the benefits of being a married couple. But we love each other just as much as most married couples, if not more than some.

N: If you could actually know that your wish would come true when you blow out your candles on your birthday, what would you wish for?

C: My oldest daughter not to struggle. She is having a rough time with adolescence and was diagnosed Bipolar a couple years ago. I wish she could wake up cured. I wish she could see how wonderful of a person she is and how much she is loved. I wish she did not struggle with anxiety and depression. If it were possible I would take her disorder on my shoulders so she could grow up and happy preteen and worry about things preteen girls are suppose to worry about like boys and clothes and friends. But I do not see that happening, so instead I wish for the love and patience to help her through this time in her life so she can grow into the loving beautiful person I know she is.

N:  I wish I could grant that wish for you Cathy.  But, since I can't do that, I have asked several of your friends to write a little note, happy, funny, sentimental or whatever they wanted and needed to say about you for your birthday.  My wish for you is that you will know you are beloved of your friends and as you will see, we all think you are great. Happy Birthday, Cathy. May it be as wonderful as you are.

Webster's dictionary defines empathy as the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.
